Drs. Bernard and Jean Haldane, in their 35 years together, from their marriage in 1968 until Bernard’s death in 2002, were partners in life and partners in a life’s work. They described their life’s work in terms of “more happy faces around the world.” They pursued their life’s work by developing, refining, and tirelessly promoting an approach to strengths articulation which has come to be known as the Dependable Strengths Articulation Process.
The Haldanes shared a passion for all aspects of their work, though Bernard is perhaps best known in the business community in connection with career development, while Jean is better known for her work among communities of faith, promoting strengths articulation as a way to discover and use gifts for serving others.
Bernard and Jean shared a special passion for children and the poor, helping them to develop self-esteem and resiliency. That special passion took them to South Africa where, in 2001, they established the Dependable Strengths Foundation (DSF). Among the many faces that are now happy faces because of DSF, there are more than a few in SOWETO, that vast network of townships outside Johannesburg.
The books written by Bernard include Career Satisfaction and Success, How to Make a Habit of Success, Young Adult Career Planning, and Job Power Now! Jean wrote Ministry Explorations and, with Bernard, co-authored Gifts: Dependable Strengths for Your Future, and Job Finding Power, a handbook to guide faith communities in providing strengths articulation as a service to members and neighbors who are in urgent need of livelihood.
In 1947, Bernard established Bernard Haldane and Associates (BHA), through which the special Haldane approach to strengths articulation gained world-wide recognition. Though it is still in operation and still bears his name, Bernard was no longer personally connected with BHA after he sold the company in 1974.
Experts in the field of career development acknowledge Bernard Haldane to be the leading pioneer. All present-day work in the field of career development has a Bernard Haldane connection. That is true also for all the wide-ranging applications of strengths articulation.
In 2002, Bernard and Jean founded the Center for Dependable Strengths (CDS) in Seattle, Washington. CDS continues the work of refining and tirelessly promoting the Haldane approach to strengths articulation known today worldwide as the Dependable Strengths Articulation Process.
