This
issue we feature Noreen Brownlie,
Employment Specialist with Edmonds Community College.
She currently works at the WorkSource Aerospace Center
in Everett, WA. Noreen attended the 5-Day DS Instructor
Training in March this year.
Noreen, having completed the 5 day DS workshop, what are
the different ways you plan to use DS?

I plan to use DS in my role as
Employment Specialist for dislocated Boeing workers at the
WorkSource Aerospace Center
in Everett. I’m also excited about doing workshops
with my women’s group, family and friends. When called
upon, I’d love to assist colleagues with their WorkFirst
and other unemployed populations.
Who would your customers be and what would the value(s)
of DS be for your customers?
Many of our former Boeing clients are in job search, others
are taking advantage of retraining and some have graduated
from retraining and are experiencing the stress of career
transition. We also have a Professional Networking Group
that meets weekly. The Job Magnet Report dovetails nicely
with our focus on the power of networking. The Job Interview
Role Play has already benefited two of our recent DS graduates.
One jobseeker said the employer visibly relaxed after hearing
our client list his strengths at the beginning of the interview.
During the 5-day DS workshop, when did you feel most intellectually
and emotionally challenged?
Allen Boivin-Brown (DS Master Trainer) related a story of
a teen-aged boy who had been labeled a throw-away kid. Allen
told us of the boy’s unrealized strengths used in his
volunteer work with elderly neighbors and revealed during
a DS workshop. The story moved me to tears. I thought about
our many dislocated workers and their hidden strengths and
potential. The thought crossed my mind that this process
can help anyone, everyone.
Which aspects of DS resonated with you the most and why?
What could be more powerful than recalling
Good Experiences and identifying your Dependable Strengths
with feedback from
others? Even attendees who feel they had an unhappy childhood
realize those Dependable Strengths that helped them cope
through
the worst of times.
Is there anything else that you would like to share about
what DS means to you, and may mean to a potential customer?
Dependable Strengths means a radical
new approach to job search. In today’s economy, it
is important to be able to identify your strengths and stand
apart from other job
seekers. Our recent graduates are already benefiting.

On a parting note…. Noreen did indeed facilitate, together
with Penny
Remfer, a DS workshop with former dislocated Boeing
workers. To read more about this, click
